Dear Parent/Teacher,

As you may be aware, an exciting new initiative involving Shelbourne F.C. and Larkin Community College was launched in September 2001.

As a result of the tremendous success of the project, we now propose to recruit a new group to start in September 2010. We are pleased to offer your pupils/players a chance to apply for a place on the scheme.

The following points are important to note:

* this project is aimed at children who are at present in 6th class in primary school

* the aim is to keep children in the education system

* it is aimed at disadvantaged areas in the Dublin region

* it is aimed at talented soccer players

* when the players are chosen (following trials) a meeting will be held with parents to address any concerns or queries related to the scheme
* the pupils will attend Larkin Community College for three years and do the standard Junior Cycle and Junior Certificate exam

* if they wish, they may then continue to do Leaving Certificate in Larkin College

* the players will receive football training from qualified coaches

* a scholarship will be awarded to participants towards the cost of books, transport and equipment

* application should be made to Larkin Community College/Shelbourne project.

The Larkin Learning Through Soccer initiative has been highlighted as an example of best European practice by Ann Bourke in "Education Through Sport" edited by Jan Janssens et al.
