Swim a Mile
Here's an email we received from the 'Swim a Mile' organisers.
Well done to all who helped!
Hi all,
Thank you very much for taking part in the Annual Ian
Daly Swim A Mile With A Smile 2011. We appreciate you taking part and
hope you enjoyed your experience. We know it was a big challenge for
all of you. For those of you who completed the swim in the National
Aquatic Centre we know from your feedback that you enjoyed the day and
we look forward to hosting you there again next year. For those
swimmers who swam their mile in other pools we hope you can join us in
the NAC next year for the 2012 swim so you can sample the atmosphere
and craic!
We have a final total for our sponsorship raised and we are
delighted to say that through your efforts and the generous
sponsorship of your family, friends and work colleagues you have
actually surpassed the total money raised in 2010! We have raised the
fantastic total of 37,000 euro through this year’s swim which brings the
total raised since we started the Ian Daly Swim A Mile to over
384,000 euro. Thank you very much for all your efforts.
We recently presented the proceeds of this year’s swim to Dr.
Michael Capra, Consultant Oncologist, Crumlin hospital and to Peter
Hanlon, from Barretstown. Pictures from the event are on our website
www.swimamile.ie and also on our Facebook page, which we would
encourage you to log on, like and explore. If you still have some
sponsorship to come in please lodge it to the charity account,
details, of which are on the website. The account stays open all year.
The aim of the swim is to raise funds for Barretstown
camp for seriously ill children, www.barretstown.org and Our Lady’s
Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, www.cmrf.org. Barretstown caters for
children with serious illnesses. While at the camp children can take
part in activities like horse riding, canoeing, high ropes and
archery. The children would not normally be able to take part due to
their illness. But Barretstown offers a safe environment, staffed by
volunteer doctors and nurses that allow this to happen. At Barretstown
they call this form of play ‘Therapeutic Recreation’ and it has been
shown to help in the recovery of the children.
Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin is the national
referral hospital for childhood illnesses. It carries out research
into childhood cancers through its research facility the Children’s
Medical Research Fund at the hospital. The facility is renowned the
world over for finding cures for childhood illnesses.
Thank you for your support,
