College Awareness Week
During College Awarenss Week we asked Staff to talk about their primary degree/college and their career pathway to generate discussion between students and teachers around college. We created a College Awareness Kahoot quiz to be played with Junior students. There was a display of past pupils and their chosen college courses/colleges on the Student Wall of Fame. There was a Career books and a college prospectus display in the Library, along with a College Awareness notice board created by Ms Hynes and Chloe. Conor O’Malley, a TUDublin representative spoke to two 2nd year groups in the library about career paths and TUDublin. On Thursday a College Speed dating event was held in the library during lunchtime. It was great to see past pupils of Larkin returning to the college to chat to Larkin students and staff about their current courses and what college life is really like.
VR Passport
Rodhán Hickey, Technologist-in-Residence The Digital Hub visited our library on Thursday and gave a short talk on VR. Students and staff had great fun trying out the Oculus Quest virtual reality headsets and got to experience a range of VR demos from epic rollercoaster rides to Beat Saber & Walk the Plank
Rodhán, who ran the Immersive Technology in The Digital Hub last week, said: “Immersive technology is really taking off and will have a massive impact on all industries, on education, healthcare, the arts, and entertainment – everything. To help users remember the experience, students collected stamps in a “VR Passport” each time they completed an experience from a specific category including Getting Started, Adventure, Empathy, Gaming and Education they got a stamp on their VR Passport.
Author Rod Smith
Rod Smith met with our Creative Writing group on Friday. They discussed their upcoming trip to Poolbeg Press and ideas on how they could contribute to Rod's next book on World War 2. As part of College Awareness Week we asked Rod to discuss his career path to date.
Debbie Thomas CDETB Writer in Residence
The CDETB Writer in Residence worked with a group of our 2nd years on Friday 22nd November. The second years are already producing great work with Debbie. She’ll be back in for another class on December 13th.
Student Book Club
Bernadette Larkin came in before school on Thursday and met with students interested in joining the Book Club along with those interested in receiving training in taking it over when her Residency finishes in December. She’s going to come in on Thursday mornings and maybe some Tuesday lunchtimes coming up to Christmas.
