CSP Libraries win 2019 CBI Award
The Junior Certificate School Programme Demonstration Library Project, is the winner of the 2019 Children’s Books Ireland Award, given at the 2019 Children’s Books Ireland International Conference at Light House Cinema, Dublin on Saturday 21st September.
On Saturday , JCSP Libraries were presented with the 2019 CBI Award in recognition of an outstanding contribution to children’s books and reading.
In 2002 the Junior Certificate School Programme Demonstration Library Project was established as a completely new library service focused on the literacy needs of secondary school students. To date, over 200,000 students have benefitted directly from having access to a JCSP library and librarian in their schools, and tens of thousands more have benefitted from the range of outreach initiatives that the Project coordinates. Over the last school year, over 120,000 books were borrowed by the 10,000 students in the 30 JCSP Library Project schools.
‘School libraries are so crucial in ensuring that all young people have equal access to the joy of reading and all its associated benefits,’ said Children’s Books Ireland CEO Elaina Ryan. ‘The JCSP Library Project is exemplary in the work it does to enthuse and engage young people, and it is more than deserving of this award in recognition of the significant impact it has had on so many young readers.’
Speak-dating/World Languages Day
We held a Speak-Dating event during lunchtime in the library to mark European Day of Languages. Language stations were set up around the library for each language. Polish, Italian, Romanian, Russian, Irish, Egyptian Arabic, Spanish and Italian stations were among those operated by students. We created a template with 8 words/phrases in English and each student ‘language teacher’ translated these into their own language and taught these to the visiting students and teachers. More than 60 students plus lots of teachers and the Principal and Deputy Principal took part in this initiative. It was a great success, it brought out the best in our students, and there was a very positive atmosphere in the library.
JCSP Coffee morning
The JCSP team hosted a coffee morning for first year parents on Wednesday 25th September at 10.00am. Parents/ guardians came to the library and met with the JCSP co-ordinators and Librarian along with the Principal and the Year Head for 1st years. They were given a presentation on JCSP and an oppurtunity to ask any questions they may have had about their child starting in secondary school. The Librarian (Michelle) baked lots of lovely library themed cakes and biscuits for our guests and they were enjoyed by all.
