A Cultural Journey to Nepal: A Memorable Morning in the Library

On Monday, 19th May, students at Larkin were treated to a vibrant and educational start to the week with a special visit from Alan Mercel-Sanca and Deepak Tamrakar. Alan, founder of the Himalayan and Nepal Arts and Culture Society and co-founder of the Ireland-Nepal Chamber of Commerce, was joined by Nepalese actor and dancer Deepak Tamrakar for a cultural session in the school library.

Together, they provided an engaging introduction to Nepal’s geography, history, traditions and cultural significance. Students learned how Nepal serves as a unique bridge between South and East Asia, enriching global understanding through its diverse heritage.

A highlight of the session was Deepak’s performance of a traditional Nepalese dance, followed by an interactive explanation of the hand gestures used and their symbolic meanings. The guests also spoke about Nepalese cuisine, sharing insights from their recent publication Traditional and Contemporary Nepali Home-Cooking, which is available at www.foodsofnepal.com.

We thank Alan and Deepak for this enjoyable and eye opening visit that sparked curiosity and appreciation for Nepalese culture among our students.
