One Book One Community 2022

One Book, One Community 2022: The New Girl by Sinéad Moriarty.

Two girls from opposite ends of the world, who decide to help each other, and change their lives forever.

We are incredibly happy to launch our chosen book “The New Girl” by Sinead Moriarty as our One Book, One Community title for 2022.

This initiative will run from 3rd March (World Book Day) to April 8th (Easter Holidays) 2022. We will be linking in with our family cluster of primary schools. Our 1st year classes, and the primary schools’ 6th classes will read the book over this time.

The book focuses on friendship and empathy, and recently won the An Post 2021 Teen and Young Adult Book of the Year Award.

As part of One Book, One Community projects, children and their families are encouraged to read and discuss a particular book, along with supporting activities held in schools, libraries and in the community.

To make the project more appealing to class teachers, the HSCLOs and JSCP team have complied resources and some activities that could be done with the class, therefore reducing the burden of work for the teacher.

This year the book will be launched on Thursday 3rd March 2022 when students from the primary school will come to collect books from Larkin Library. We are grateful to Gill Books and the JCSP Library Project (Junior Certificate Schools Programme) and HSCL (Home School Community Liaison) schemes which helped with acquiring the books.

Below is the link to a welcome message from Sinead Moriarty, the book’s author. We are so grateful to Sinead for her writing and for her support for this project.

Further activities are planned. We have a link to Blooklet where we have uploaded quizzes for each chapter. We are asking the primary schools to work on designing bookmarks for us. We plan to organize another talk about the content of the book in April.
